The One Dollar Table

My husband gave me this lovely baker’s rack about 8 years ago, when we moved into our first home together:

Until recently, it housed our microwave, but we no longer need it for that purpose. So, for the last several months, I’ve been trying to use it to solve my kitchen storage dilemma. We need a place to store books, Bibles, our radio, and other frequently used items, but this piece just isn’t the answer. The open, wrought-iron shelving shows everything, which makes it look too cluttered, and I can’t stand anything up on the shelves, because it falls through.

At a garage sale on Saturday, I found an old table, with a very scarred, cobalt blue finish. It was only a dollar, so I dragged it home, scrubbed it with bleach water, and sanded it lightly. I gave it two coats of semi-gloss paint, leftover from when I painted my kitchen. Now, it looks like this:

I dressed it up with a crocheted star, made by my Grandma, and a scented candle, nestled on a china saucer from Goodwill. It’s pretty and functional, and it solves my problem. The best part is that it was very cheap, so if I find a better solution in the future, I can resell the table at my own garage sale–probably at a profit. Now, I just have to figure out what to do with the baker’s rack. Again.

I really enjoyed MommyFest! I made some new friends, and found some great blogs that I really enjoy reading. This morning, I was pleased to learn that I won a procrastination e-course giveaway from My Simpler Life. I definitely have procrastination issues in certain areas of my life, so I’m looking forward to learning some new strategies for dealing with this problem.

For example, I’ve been procrastinating about dealing with the giant paper mountain, which accumulated over vacation. So, I’m gonna go do that right now! Well, after I finish this cup of coffee. And maybe some toast. Then, of course, I will need to get dressed, and brush my teeth….
