He's right, it's not. It's just a typical, dingy, unfinished basement laundry room, and really, it's pretty darn ugly.

However, because it's the only real storage room in the house, we've taken advantage of every bit of available space, and that's what I want to share with you.
Here are the famous laundry room shelves, which you've heard me refer to a million times:

We store our bulk-purchased groceries and household supplies here. Whenever we're out of something upstairs, we just go shopping in the basement! We recently did our winter stock-up at our favorite scratch and dent store, which is why the shelves are so packed right now.
We store our luggage and holiday decorations under the stairs, behind the washer and dryer.

All of the boxes are neatly labeled,

and my husband pounded nails into the backs of the stairs, so that we could hang things, like Easter baskets and decorative garlands.

I also stash larger kid gifts that won't fit in my gift box here. So far, the kids haven't figured out my not-so-clever hiding spot.
Here are my washing machine and dryers:

I have two dryers, because my husband noticed that in the winter, when I couldn't use my outside clothesline, I was always waiting for the dryer to catch up so I could put another load in the washer. He stopped at a garage sale on his way home from an appointment one day, and bought the white, GE gas dryer on the right, for a mere $75. At first I thought that two dryers were an extravagance, but now I don't know what I ever did without them.
I keep old towels, destined for the rag bag, on top of the dryers, to help keep them clean.

The ice cream bucket full of dryer lint is waiting to go out to the compost bin. I use the little basket to store bleach pens, scissors, a small scrub brush, stain removers, etc. so that I don't have to sift through a pile of clutter to find what I need. The little shoe box is full of clothespins, for my indoor clothesline.

My husband stapled 4 rows of heavy-duty twine to the rafters, so that we can still hang laundry in the winter (see Cakesie's little mug at the bottom left? She's always underfoot!)
On this little diagonal wall, next to the dryer, my husband put up a series of hooks. I use them to store my gift bags (recycled, of course). They are organized by occasion - Christmas, Birthday, all-occasion, and other holidays, like Halloween and Valentine's Day.

My husband also stapled twine across the wall studs, so that we could store rolls of clearance-priced gift wrap between them (the pink container was purchased for $1 at a garage sale. We use it for cat food storage).

I bought these plastic, stacking storage blocks for $1 at a garage sale. I use them to store small gift boxes, and a Rubbermaid container with scissors, tape and other package-wrapping paraphernalia.

This recycled box houses tissue paper, and wrapping paper cut-offs, suitable for wrapping small packages.

I love cheap, and even better, FREE storage solutions!
Well, there you have it Kim. My not-so-pretty, but very functional laundry room. I hope it helps give you some ideas for storage and organization.
Have a great, long weekend everyone!

It doesn't have to be pretty to WORK! I love it! Amazing!!!
All I have to say is "WOW." I'm always amazed and impressed (but no longer surprised) by your organization :)
I love how organized everything seems. I want a label maker.
I don't know if you have a fireplace or not but dryer lint makes an excellent fire starter. I keep balls of it in an egg carton in the laundry room.
I soooooo miss my Nebraska basement. Sniff.
Thank you so much for sharing! I love "snooping" into other peoples storage areas. It gives me great ideas and for some reason I just really enjoy it.:)
I enjoy just going into our food storage room and looking around. It's probably silly to others, but it's fun for me.:) My sister does this too, so maybe it's hereditary.
Very nice work, Heather!

All I have to say is, "we must be related!" I think I have exactly the same storage items and areas. Granted I don't have a basement, not very popular in California :) ... I have to say though when you can make order out of chaos it just makes life more fun AND task execution so much more efficient.
I am so envious of the two dryers! That is a common dilema at my house too. Never thought of buying a second dryer though. :)
Again, WOW!! My goal for the next year is to purge, purge, purge, and this post is so inspirational. I have storage space similar to yours, but it's filled with junk. Meanwhile, the gift bags are shoved into my sons' bedroom closet, where they become so wrinkled that I end up tossing them anyway. Thanks for the ideas!
WOW - you are so organised! Love the pic with Cakes in - she's so precious - can't wait to read about her antics as she gets older! I love the gift wrap storage solution - what a great idea! I've seen your shelves before & still marvel about how organised they are - doesn't Cakes get in & destroy - my boys pull everything out of our pantry area down at there height, so I have to put everything up! Hope you have a nice weekend as well (even though I think it's actually still friday there if I remember correctly!!)
Yes! I found a file box. Thanks! I moved my stuff to it and it's waiting along the wall incase we have to leave. Thanks so much :)
That is amazing!
I think you have a great system there. It looks like it really works
Thanks for you lunch ideas a few weeks ago they are really coming in handy here.
My laundry room looks similar to yours although yours is a lot more organized! I really, really LOVE coming to your blog...your posts are so interesting, helpful and honest. It is so great that you share everything with us about your life and home. After I read here, it gives me motivation to go and do something in my own home! And when I complete something, I feel so good inside. Thank you so much for everything on your blog...I truly appreciate it! Your husband is a lucky guy!
Blessings, Janel
