This is not the first time I've heard comments like this. I'm simply using this one as an example, to illustrate a point. If you think I'm overreacting, well...that's your prerogative. The point of this post is still valid).
When I wrote my List Love post, I posted my grocery list for the week, and an anonymous reader left me this comment:
"Do you buy a lot of name brand items? It looks like you do according to your list. Also, I was looking at your recipe blog and they look positively yummy but there is one recipe listed as vegetarian that isn't...it calls for chicken broth. Love your blog!!!"
Oh really? For someone who loves my blog, you certainly have enough complaints about it.
In my response to this question, I explained that I actually buy almost all generics, unless I have a coupon, sale, or combination of both that brings the price of a name brand down to the same price (or lower) as generic. Other times, I write the brand name because it's easier, but there are some name brand items that I buy because I've tried the generic and didn't like it, or found that it didn't work as well. The whole time I was writing this response, I was inwardly fuming, because I understood the thinly-veiled meaning behind this question. What this person was really asking is, "If you're supposedly so frugal, why do you buy so many name brand items?"
This is an example of what I call "frugal snobbery." Frugal snobs make the incorrect assumption that everyone must be frugal in the same way...meaning the same way that they are.
There are many different ways to be frugal, and we all have different talents, resources, goals and values. Some people are frugal not because they have to be, but because they choose to be. Their frugal strategies and goals may be totally different than those of a person with limited income, or desperate circumstances, such as unemployment or bankruptcy.
The truth is, I don't really care how another person chooses to be frugal...or not. I only concern myself with the spending habits of others if they:
a) ask me for help
b) have already asked me for help, and I've told them what to do, but instead of making the necessary lifestyle changes they continue to complain to me about their problems, or
c) when their spending habits are so wasteful that they impact others (IE: they declare bankruptcy, carry no health insurance - even though they could afford to if they didn't waste money on unnecessary things, fail to pay child support, or don't provide for the basic needs of their children).
I write this blog because I want to share my frugal strategies and ideas with you....not because I want to tell you how to live. Take what you can use, apply it as you see fit, and discard the rest. I'm not going to alert the media if you buy serving-size packages of chips, or pack your husband's lunch sandwich in a Ziploc bag instead of a reusable container. If you choose to use cloth napkins and hang laundry, but you want to buy Hamburger Helper, I don't care. That's your business.
We worked very hard for 7 years to become debt-free. We are fiscally responsible, and we meet all of our financial obligations each month. We save for our retirement and for our children's education. I think we've earned the right to buy Town House crackers (because we like them), or Kraft Singles (because they make good grilled cheese, and the generics are watery), or occasional Snack Pack pudding cups for Bee's lunch (because I'm running late and forgot to make scratch pudding the night before).
Yes, that's right - I sometimes buy Snack Packs. Stop the world.

I love this post! I get these comments all the time. If I am so frugal (cheap) why do we eat out all the time? Or why do my kids wear clothes from Gymboree? Well, like you we are debt free and we build the eating out into our budget. When the money is gone we stay home! And, I have three really tall skinny kids that Gymboree clothes fit the best and I am a bargain shopper and never pick them up for more than what I would pay at Target! Okay, now I'm fuming too! But, I still love this post! You go girl!
I like snack packs too so there!
LOL! Oh Heather, you are so right. I'll also point out that occasionally, a name brand will be less expensive than the generic.
I agree with you on the Kraft cheese. It just tastes better. We also buy Mountain Dew and Skippy peanut butter, because that's what Mr. Clairol likes. He works so hard to support us, I can't bear to cut out his little luxuries. I find other ways to save.
I think you are wonderful. I cannot count the helpful hints, recipes and ideas I've taken from your blog. Better yet, you're real. You don't have these impossible or distasteful suggestions. You don't say my way or the highway. You get it.
Blessings, Sister.
You have no idea how happy I am that you aren't alerting the media police as I sit here munching happily away on (namebrand) m&ms and diet pepsi.....whew!!!!
I sacrifice in some areas so that I don't have to sacrifice in other areas.
I am frugal but it doesn't mean you can't enjoy life either. At this moment I'm craving a snack wrap from McDonalds for lunch, doesn't that mean I'm a sinner?! No way.
I buy snack packs, and other named brand stuff ( when's it's on sale), but I do not buy something mainly because it's cheap. Some Cheap food isn't good for you anyways, it just depends on what it is.
I also like to dine out, but we have build that into our budget along with an Entertainment fund. We believe that it's ok to enjoy the fruits of your labor, if your being responsible.
I couldn't agree more! :-) I enjoy reading about your frugal strategies and I also like that you are real.
Lol! Loved the post! Hey! What you are doing works!! I'm inspired and get lots of ideas! Keep up the great work!!
I agree that people will have there own ways to be frugal and really how frugal they have to be will be different for each person. Some people will choose to spend a little more on food, and save on clothes, and someone else will save money on not having fancy cable so they have the money to go to the movie theater. It will be what each person will choose to sacrifice so they can do or have something else.
So that I can stay home with our kids an make it one income. We decided that it was worth is to not have fancy cable, eat generic, 95% of out clothes are used, and only have one older vehicle we share. People ask how we can stand it or don't see how you do it. Well it was a sacrifice we decided that was worth it. And it works for us.
I love this blog, I read it every day. I love Heather and her family. I wish she was my neighbor. Keep up the great work.
Kraft cheese is like the only cheese I will buy. I found it 99cents a pack the other day at our local store and stocked up!! Cause I hate store brand cheese. its either oily or waters. Kraft is perfect. Funny though, I prefer walmarts store brand (in the red box) macaroni and cheese to kraft. Its better. I too have my name brand faves. I love your blog....with no complaints....keep up the good work!!!! (oh I made the cheesy bread recipe the other day....AWESOME!!!! I've made it several times since....gonna become a staple in y recipe box! )
wow...now that was blood pumping good reading. Some people!!! I agree with previous posters. I do without in some areas, so that I can have things in others. I love your blog!!! I've been inspired by many of your posts. Keep on keeping on...
My dad assumes that generic is always cheaper, never comparing unit prices of different brands. He doesn't care if the name brand actually tastes better, so he ALWAYS buys the generic regardless of the quality. But he is a happy man, so who cares? I have learned a lot from his frugal lifestyle and have implemented variations of it in my own life now that I'm an adult. We have very different approaches to frugality, but we respect each other and love to compare notes. In fact, he bought me my own copy of The Tightwad Gazette for Christmas! I wish people could avoid passing judgements on others. Heather, keep your head up and continue what you are doing. You are an inspiration! In fact, I have been working on my price book and was able to take it with me shopping at Aldi's for the first time today. I loved being able to compare unit prices! It was WONDERFUL!!!
Heather, I really do love your blog, but on this I have to respectfully disagree. I don't know if there was more to this readers post, but from what I read, I just didn't find it that offensive.
Sorry, but this is how I feel. I believe it is harder on you to respond with anger and spend time "fuming" over this. It may not be that this person is a "frugal snob", she just may be wondering and having questions about how you make it work with being debt-free and frugal.
Please understand that I mean no offense here,
Joyce
Loved your posttoday! LOL!!! The name of my blog is Clean Frugal Living and as I ponder on being frugal... I purchase lots of named brands too... use coupons... pay my bills each month... but some people may not think I am frugal at all. I am a single mother paying my own way in the world and really working hard to get out of debt. I am frugal because I have to be to make it on my own and provide for my family.
I love learning from others in getting great deals and being more aware of my expenditures. I love getting great ideas from you and I love your recipes too. Blogging is a great wasy to widen your horizons from "not perfect people" as we all try harder to do learn different things, ways to be thrifty and to be a better me. I love your blog and learn tons from all the things you share. A Big THANK YOU comes your way!
I'm frugal too, in my own way. I agree with all the above. What good does buying something just because it's cheap if you do not like to eat it? It will get wasted. That's not very frugal. Maybe you could do a post on the different areas of being frugal and not so frugal?
I really hope you don't lose too much sleep over this post. The person sounds a bit jealous to me and is going to look for any possible area to nit pick. Seriously, he/she has absolutely nothing better to do than criticize you for buying brand name crackers....Ummm, anonymous poster, get a life!
Keep up the wonderful blog and I have absolutely no complaints about it :)
I call myself frugal because I choose what I want to spend my money on with eyes opened regarding the consequences. I go 'cheap' when it's something I don't really care about, but buy what I want when I do care. Maybe it should be called 'conscious spending'? However I say it, we live on far less than we make very comfortably. :) I love your blog because I love how you guys set a goal and achieved it, and continue to live that way. Way to go!
It's OK Joyce, I'm not offended. I actually wasn't offended by the anonymous comment either - just irritated because I've heard this type of thing many times before.
I do believe that this comment was written to be critical. If not, why post anonymously? And the "also, one of your recipes has a problem" part tells me that the intention was to nitpick.
Hi Heather, I believe it is very difficult to judge motives on-line. Maybe, it's because there is so much communication given with physical gestures, body language, intonation in the voice, etc. It's hard to know what someone's motive is, when you can't hear their voice or see them face to face.
I think, it may be possible that this person is just impressed with how you are able to be frugal and still buy name brands. If someone is new to being frugal, they may have the idea that you have to buy store/no name brands in order to get a good bargain. Personally, I have people in my life that are shocked when they learn that we buy brand names and yet spend so little on groceries.
I guess, I'm just a bit concerned. The original post was on December 10 and you still seem quite upset about it. I have had times like this with my MIL and have learned that the best thing to do with these feelings is to take them to the Lord...and leave them with Him.:)
Hugs, Joyce
I really liked this post--it made some good points. I liked what you said how we're frugal in our own ways and according to our own talents. For example, when I'm working full-time (I got laid off and have to find another job), I'm way too tired to be making a homemade meal every night, so sometimes I'll have a Stouffer's Skillet Meal. Sure, it's almost $4, but I only eat half (leaving the other half for lunch the next day), and it sure beats getting fast food. I know it's not all that "frugal," but it's what works for me at times and I try to only use those when I really don't have the time or energy to cook.
Also, I'm a new mom (11-month old), and so I'm just learning ways to be frugal with him, so my talents in that area are limited, but as I learn more, I figure out new ways to be frugal and I get better at it. We can't just know everything at once--we have to give ourselves time to learn it and get better at it.
I say that no one can judge another's frugal-ness. You may think that someone isn't frugal for this reason or that, but if that person has worked it into their budget, they should be able to do it. We all need little rewards and luxuries. For me, it's just about staying in our budget and being able to save for a rainy day.
PS I appreciate the tips you give in your blog to help us save money and learn to be frugal because really, I don't know where else to go for this information. Thanks.
I love reading your blog. It is a highlight of my day. Thank you for all of your tips.
Seriously. I love your blog and take what tips work for me and leave the rest (my children are grown). It's your blog and you can write what you want. That commenter just needs to move on or write her own blog.
I think you've overreacted, and that was before reading the comment above that the original comment was left last December. You could chill out some. Anon from New York.
Hi Heather--just wanted to let you know that my interview is up on my blog! It was a lot of fun!
I just want to make something clear - I have NOT been sitting here stewing and fretting over this since December. I keep a list of post ideas in a journal, so when I received this comment, I made a note to write about this subject. However, I have lots of post ideas, and I'm just now getting to this one.
This is not the first time I've heard comments like this. I'm simply using this one as an example, to illustrate a point.
For those who think I'm overreacting, well..that's your prerogative.
Thank you for your honest and realistic thoughts. I know that there are many products that I use name brand on because I have tried the generic and find that I don't like them and neither does my family. Taste is also important to frugality so that there isn't waste ~ If no one likes the flavor it's not going to be eaten. I think you show a lot of little way's to be frugal that work for everyone, If someone doesn't like the exact way you do they can just adjust it. I appreciate your blog and the advice you give. Let the Frugal snobs find their own ideas.
((Hugs)) Mechelle
I have to chuckle when I read "if you are still fuming over it". When it's something you are passionate about.. it always .. what's the right word here... gets you excited? You know what I mean. When someone wants to talk about coupons... I get ALL excited! I love sharing what I know. When someone tells me there is no way i'm saving money buying namebrade with coupons.. it does put me on the defense because I know I can and DO save money. I spend less now, we have more - and it's pretty much all name brand. I guess it's like arguing with a stump - they are never gonna understand.
Hat's off to you, Heather! I remember reading that post and thinking/feeling exactly like you wrote :)
I just looked up 'frugal' in the dictionary. It says "economical in the expenditure of resources; sparing"... It does not define 'how to be frugal' so that is totally subjective and depends on who you are and how you define it in your own life - like many have already said.
I would not have said we are a particularly 'frugal' family but I think to some extent we are. We do have a mortgage but we pay extra on it every fortnight, we save, we live within our means, we buy what we can afford, our clothing is not expensive or fancy, neither is the food we buy, I plan a menu etc....We still like to have our luxuries like diet coke though ;)
I guess frugal looks different for different people - maybe we're not classed as frugal by some because we still have our motgage debt?
I think Heather's post was aiming to highlight that 'how' you be frugal is a personal choice and what works for some won't for others.
I think God wants us to be good stewards with our money, but even He does not really define the 'how'.
I still have lessons to learn but for now I'm happy with the way our family live :)
Thanks for sharing Heather - there'll always be people who differ in opinion and are not scared to say so!
Heather, don't let it get to you....I know you say it's not because you have bigger fish to fry but you know that fish is still in the freezer..lol
Just ignore them and move forward....enjoy your blog and you being real...
Interesting how the critical posts are usually anonymous.
Certain things just shouldn't be generic. I loved this post and it made great points. I hate when people (who know how frugal I am) come over and make a comment on my Coffeemate creamer (just for example) or my non generic soda. It's like-hey I'm cheap, but I don't have to deprive myself of things I enjoy!
Fantastic post!!! I often write the brand name on my shopping list even though usually I'll buy the generic - it's just easier that way. I think your blog is wonderful & you're doing a great job. Thanks for all the hard work you put into it!
LOL! You know I'm rolling after reading these comments too! Did you not make a point of starting off the post with...I haven't been fuming about this since December....
Shopping today I came in $42 under budget...and had a basket full of stuff (NAME BRAND I MIGHT ADD)I never would have bought...except I had coupons! GASP!!!! How could I??? Because with a teen that will go to school without eating in the morning if there's not something quick she can grab...and the same teen packing her lunch half the time...with the coupons that will bring an item down to $1 or less - I WILL buy name brand crap so that she will eat. But I do have to have the coupon that brings it down to at least a buck. And if I don't have those coupons she is going hungry if she won't eat what I've got.
And I don't even feel guilty.
I have a post ideas file too. I also have some posts in draft form of ideas that I am working on but haven't finished yet (due to time or whatever).
Autumn - I actually added the little intro paragraph after "Anon from New York" told me that I "could chill out some."
It can be easy to slip into the "so and so doesn't do such and such which I do therefore so and so can't really be frugal" mentality. I guess it's important to remember that everyone has different skills and different preferences so something which would be worth the saving to one person may not be to another.
I think you do a wonderful job on your blog. You have alot of wonderful ideas on here. Keep up the great work!
oh man. I'm laughing so much over here...
Heather, you rock. No matter what :)
I do that "note it down for a future post" thing too :) Helps on those slow days.
I had to laugh at the sadly misinformed soul who criticized your purchase of snack pack puddings...I did a price comparison and it's just as cheap to buy the readymade! Go figure! There is difference between "frugal" and "cheap" IMHO.
