When I left the house, all was quiet on the weather front. I was happily puttering up and down the aisles, but I kept overhearing little snippets of conversation like, "Man, it's nasty out!" and "Do you think school will be canceled tomorrow?" Alarmed, I called my husband, who was working in his basement office (he's been extremely busy lately because of the low interest rates and rush to refinance).
I asked him if the weather had gotten bad since I left home. He went upstairs and looked out the kitchen window, to find that about 4 inches of snow had fallen in the mere 90 minutes since I left. He turned on the TV, and the weatherman was in the process of advising people to stay home and not travel because of dangerous wind chill factor, and poor visibility. I had been in a blissfully oblivious state inside the world of Wal-Mart, and had no idea that all this was going on.
I decided that I'd better head home, so I ventured out into the bitter cold (-5 degrees), and cleaned an entire snow mountain off my car. I drove home at a snail's pace (25 mph) and could see only a few feet in front of me. It took me 45 minutes to make the 15-mile trip. By the time I pulled into the garage, I was so tense that my jaw hurt from clenching my teeth, and I was clutching the steering wheel in an iron grip. I was very thankful that God brought me home safely.
This morning, we woke up to giant snow drifts, and a thermometer reading of 2 degrees.

On the radio, I heard the dreaded "no school" announcement. Doom. DOOM!
Don't get me wrong, I don't mind having my children at home all day...as long as they get along. The problem is - they don't. For the last couple of months, they've been fighting like cats and dogs. Now that Cakesie is in the habit of asserting her two-year-old, er...independence, she feels free to let Bee know when she's not happy, usually by screaming. Bee, being bigger and stronger, just physically overpowers Cakes to get what she wants.
Yesterday, school was 2 hours late because of the snowstorm we had Sunday night (yes, it snows pretty much every day here), and this is just a small sampling of what I heard between 7:30 AM and 10:00 AM:
"Sissie no! That's MY Teletubby!"
"MOM! Cakesie took my Barbie and she won't give it back!"
"Mommy, Cakesie hit Pumpkin! Make her say sorry!"
"Mommy, Sissie pull my hair!
"Sissie I want it! It's MINE!"
"Mama, Sissie stole my dress-up drips!" (she means dress-up dress)
"MOOOOMMM! Tell Cakes to get out of my room! I don't want her in there!"
and my personal favorite, which came from Cakesie,
"Mommy, Sissie won't freakin' stop it!"
(I'm not proud of it, but I'm pretty sure she got that from me. I try to never swear in front of my children, so I sometimes resort to watered-down versions).
If they fought that much in a mere 2 1/2 hours, can you imagine what my entire day will be like today?
I'll be freakin' crazy by bedtime.

I feel so sorry for you! I would gladly trade houses with you for a while so you could enjoy our "winter" with no snow, but you probably couldn't drive down here now because of the weather. I hope there is school tomorrow.
Ahhhhh....the joys of being a stay at home mom!! I sure can relate to what you're going through, although my girls are now grown. Just a warning...if Caksie is anything like my youngest (and she sounds like she is) you're gonna have some real "fun" when she gets to be a teenager!! :) Love from a former stay at home mom
Oh man I hear ya. The school days with Little Guy are so peaceful until his sister comes home and then it's war. You'd think since there are 3 years between them it wouldn't be like that. Sigh.
At least part of the time they play well together and hug and are sweet. I wish there were more times like that. My favorite is when they lay next to each other and have little conversations. Of course, that only lasts a minute or two until they start fighting over pillows, blankets, stuffed animals, or whatever is handy. My Mom always tells me to enjoy it because it will be over before you know it but it's hard to enjoy it when they are hitting and Do time outs work for your girls?
I'm glad you made it home safely with groceries. Now you really don't have to go anywhere. Have you tried making sugar snow with the girls? I wish it would snow here so we could try it. Big Girl and I are reading Little House so I know she's looking forward to doing that when it snows.
When my girls were little and they fought I would make them hug each other and make them say they loved each other. Sincerely! They HATED it. It would get to the point they would not fight to avoid having to go through all that. (Yes, I am a genius!) They are 24 and 19 now and live on their own. I still threaten to make them hug when they get into a spat!
LOL Heather :) I'm rolling. Not that I don't sypathize with you, it's just hillarious that you put into words what I feel most days. With having 4 kids from preteen down to the learning to assert himself 2 1/2 year old I truly understand your plight. This season of the year makes it difficult being stuck inside most days. We do not have snow lately but our temperatures are close to ZERO. The older 2 are in school and I will take the 4 year old to preschool but 2 1/2 hours doesn't give much of a break. Right now the little ones are screaming at each other about who gets to be the "cat" and sit in the cat bed. Just what I need, two really hairy toddlers!! God bless. Tina
hee hee! good luck with that! :)
you have my sympathy.
I have had that exact same thing going on at my house. My boys just seem to bicker constantly. I don't know if it because they have just been cooped up in the house so much lately or what.
Somehow we missed the large amount of snow you guys got and only received about an inch or two.
We didn't even have a delay this morning which surprised me.
Good luck and here is hoping for school tomorrow.
oh your having pretty much the same weather that we've having here too! and It's still snowing here and we might have icy rain later today yuck!
Have you considered moving here? It was a balmy 75 a couple of days ago. We are having our first real cold snap this week. It is expected to get down to 24 here Friday morning, and that is like 30 below to us!!!! My daughter has never even seen snow! LOL!
Good luck today. Im scared of Monday when we all have off. I know excatlly what you mean
Heather as much as I feel your pain I am so happy to read this today. Last night I had the girls
( same ages as your) in the bathtub and they were fighting and yelling and making bath time miserable. And I actually thought " this is crazy how come my girls don't get along like Heathers, what is up with that they are the same ages" I was picturing all the cute pictures of your girls loving each other , big smiles and what you have written about them loving each other.
So your post today was a huge relief it must just be a stage they have to go through, if I don't lock them up before they are through it.
So if it helps you at all My girls are at the same place yours are and its really only been in the last month or 2
Of course Emily is walking around right now singing "pretty mommy" isn't' she so sweet and innocent, just ask her.
I'd be laughing with you, if I wasn't crying the same story....!
My kids are four years apart so they didn't really bug each other much but they did have their moments. Especially since they shared a bedroom for many years.
Those are the days when you pray for bedtime, lol!
You made me laugh! I hope they don't drive you freakin' insane! I totally understand though! Good Luck!
OH NO! My prayers are freakin' with you today, sister.
Heather, my goodness....... I can't possibly catch up on all your posts after only having been away 4 days!!
Anyway, nice to catch up on some of your news (my kids need feeding, so I have to stop reading for now....)
That snow is absolutely beautiful - I'm sure it's hard to live with, but we're all insanely jealous of that beauty you have right outside your door! Hope the girls are getting along better.... ;)
I'm thankful to live in california...82 degrees here today. Kiddos wore shorts! Really though, I feel your pain. We all do I think! Despite the stressful drive, Im actually a tiny bit jealous of the walmart trip in peace! :)Oh well... Enjoy the winter wonderland.
I DON'T MISS THAT!!!
As much as I loved the whole feel of midwest living....I HATE too much snow.
Not a problem in Texas.
HAHAHAHA Oh, that's priceless. Probably funnier cuz it's not my kid saying it ;) But I'm betting I'd be trying *really* hard to not bust a gut if it were my kid. :)
I can't believe how much snow you have there! The snow we get here on the mountains is nothing compared to that! It sure looks so beautiful (even though I'm sure you're sick of it by now!) Glad you're keeping safe!
Ahh I say freakin' too! Along with frickin' and flippin'.
If I stub my toe or drop something though I say the 4 letter D word before I even realize it. Need to work on that one :(
Also friggin' :)
