Why Adam Lambert Didn’t Win American Idol

What I have to say on this subject may not make me popular, but this is my blog, so I’m going to say it anyway.

Adam Lambert lost American Idol for one reason…because he’s gay. And this makes me very sad.

I am a Christian. I believe that homosexuality is a sin. The Bible is quite clear on this subject:

“Do not practice homosexuality; it is a detestable sin.”
Leviticus 18:22

However, the Bible also says that in the eyes of God, the penalty for all sin is the same,

“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23

and that we are all sinners in the eyes of God:

“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” Romans 3:23

Adam Lambert has never confirmed or denied his homosexuality. However, based on pictures which have been circulating on the internet, it seems clear that he is. Even so, does that make any of us “better” than him? Is there any one of us who can say that we have never committed a sin? Does his homosexuality mean that he shouldn’t win a singing competition?

NO.

Adam Lambert was, without a doubt, the biggest talent on American Idol. Even if you didn’t like his style, his vocal range, showmanship, and pure, raw talent could not be matched by any other contestant. His performances were praised by the judges every week, he has legions of fans, and everyone predicted that he would win, hands down. But he didn’t.

He didn’t win, because even in a country where we can elect a black president, we still hold on to so many prejudices. I know people who claim to be Christians, but instead of spreading the truth of Christ’s gospel in love, they choose to spread thinly-veiled hate. They hate President Obama. They hate gays. They hate abortion doctors, and people who use IVF to get pregnant (according to them, I am a murderer). Some even hate women, because they have twisted the Scriptures to fit their opinion that women are “inferior.”

I read a blog post this morning which suggested that the “Christian vote” is what led to Adam’s defeat, because fundamentalist Christians didn’t care about voting for the person with the most talent – they only cared about voting against the homosexual. Of course, I have no way of knowing whether or not this is true, but if it is, well….this kind of hatred just makes me sick.

I said that if Adam didn’t win, I would never watch American Idol again. I stand by those words. It’s become nothing more than a popularity contest, heavily influenced by religion and politics. It’s not a true barometer of talent. It’s a joke.

Adam Lambert is a true talent, and a kind and gracious person. If he is a homosexual, then I pray that God will deliver him from that sin, and that he will come to know Christ. When his album comes out, I’ll be first in line to buy it. Some people will say that if I do, I’m not a “true Christian,” but you know what? I think I’ll leave the judgment up to God. I know that I’m a terrible sinner, and God has forgiven me. Adam can be forgiven too.

“Say among the nations, “The LORD reigns!
Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved;
he will judge the peoples with equity.
Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice;
let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
let the field exult, and everything in it!
Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy
before the LORD, for he comes,
for he comes to judge the earth
He will judge the world in righteousness,
and the peoples in his faithfulness.”

Psalm 96: 10-13
