Stuff I'm Thankful For

1) My loving husband. When I think of him, I think of a line from a song by Train (one of my favorite bands), "I look around at what I've got, without you it ain't a lot, I've got everything....with you, everything."

(I was hugely pregnant with Cakes in this picture, and it appears that he was teasing me...but that's nothing new).

2) I don't have to cook Thanksgiving dinner this year! We're going together with my parents on a pre-cooked dinner from the grocery store. All I have to bring is my famous Thanksgiving cheese ball, and orange fluff salad. This makes me very happy, because I'm so tired and uncomfortable, due to this....

3) Giant, 31-weeks-pregnant tummy.

Look! My stomach is so huge that it provides a little shelf for my equally huge bosoms to rest on. See, you can always find the good in every situation, if you look hard enough. No seriously...I'm very thankful for this little boy, growing and kicking and squirming inside me. My long-time readers know that last year at this time, he seemed like an impossible dream. And while we're on the subject, I'm thankful for...

4) These little girls. They make life fun (and funny).

5) My Dad and Karen. It's at times like this, when I'm exhausted and irritable, when I realize just how much I rely on them for help and support, how much they do for us, how much they love our kids, and how much we all love them. I hope they don't ever decide to move away, because we would be lost without them.

6) Our friends and family. At this time of year, when so many people are sad and lonely, we are blessed to have people who care about us. This is no small thing, but it's something that many of us take for granted.

7) My husband's job security. In a year that has brought trials and hardships to so many, we've been fortunate. We thank God for this every day.

8) Milk. But you know that already. Sometimes it's the only thing that gets me through the day. I could be an advertisement for the Dairy Council.

9) Our church. I just found out that they have a meal service for new parents, and I signed up for it. After DJ is born, some kind soul will bring us food each night, for as long as we need it. Now we won't have to survive on Pop Tarts, granola bars, and lunch meat for a month, like we did after Cakes was born.

10) YOU. At a time when I was terribly discouraged, and thinking about giving up on this blog, you all came out of the woodwork in an outpouring of love and support. I was overwhelmed, and reminded of why I write. Thank you.

At church on Sunday, our pastor gave a sermon about gratitude. He explained that while gratitude doesn't come naturally to us as human beings, we can learn to be thankful if we make a habit of it. It just takes practice. He suggested that every day, not just on Thanksgiving, we should write on our calendar at least one good thing that happened. When we get in the habit of recognizing the good that God does in our lives, gratitude - instead of grumbling - becomes as natural as breathing.

I'm going to take this challenge. Will you?

This will be my last post until after the holiday. I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

I already have a post done up for tomorrow (for my other blog, The Five Moms And A Blog) but I won't be posting for the rest of the week either.

See, great minds think alike, lol!

So true. And I'm thankful for you Heather. It was you and your wonderful blog that I found when I typed into google "schedule for stay at home moms" when I felt like I was at the end of my rope. I never knew that one little click would change my attitude so and give me the confidence to know that I very well COULD do this. Your advice and encouragement really turned it around for me. So you and "Want What You Have" are two things I'm very grateful for this year! May God continue to bless you and your sweet family.

I encouraged my readers a while back to start a thankfulness journal, a place to write one new thing everyday that they (I) am thankful for. It's a great way to be purposefully thankful.

Enjoy thanksgiving - that's not something we celebrate here in Australia.

What a great list! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving.

Sounds like a pretty good list. Have you ever heard of the blog, Holy Experience? Each Monday, the author, Ann Voskamp, lists things she is thankful for and invites her readers to do the same. I plan on joining after Thanksgiving, and seeing how much I come up with to be thankful for, Thanksgiving to Thanksgiving.

I'm glad you don't have to cook up a big Thanksgiving dinner. Relax and take it easy.

Beautiful list!

And hubs has a smoker so he's doing ribs and chicken...which leaves me with very little cooking also!

Songbird checked out a youth service at a church we are trying yesterday. The youth pastor preached on how Jesus healed the 10 lepers. Only ONE came back to thank him. He challenged the kids to always thank Christ and our Lord...because he noticed. And what else is there.

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours...and that beautiful belly and precious package inside!

I love the picture of the two of you and what your pastor said is so true. I had a VERY budy day and yet the little things I'm thankful for are all stored away in my mind and because of that I can say it was a good day!!

That is a lot to be thankful for. As usual, you remind me to count my blessings instead of complaining about them! Have a lovely, restful holiday.

Have a blessed Thanksgiving surrounded by those you love and who love and support you.
I too am striving to see the good, no matter how small the blessings, in each day.

I love to read the things that people are thankful for...great post! When Jack lost his job in March, I would thank God for things like our home, food, clothes and family. He truly took care of us because we never missed a mortgage payment and all of our bills were payed and we always had food. Jack finally found a great job (that he just loves)! Even though it took 7 months, I always knew that God would bring him work just at the right time! I have continued to thank God everyday (sometimes several times a day) for even the smallest things!

I hope that you and your family have a happy and healthy Thanksgiving and holiday season!
Janel (stay well my friend)

Hope you have a happy Thanksgiving - it's one holiday I wish we celebrated over here!
You are looking beautiful (although just looking at your beautiful belly makes me hot - lucky you live over there & not here at the moment!!
What a great list of things to be thankful for. I've never thought of gratitude as something we learn - but I love the idea of writing down one thing I'm thankful for each day - will do that in my diary!
Enjoy your day off with your gorgous family!
